Indonesia's $12,000 EV Could Save 20M Hectares of Forest

Indonesia was about to bulldoze forests the size of Great Britain, but a $12,000 electric car just changed everything.

President Prabowo Subianto had planned to convert 20 million hectares of forest into biofuel plantations to reduce Indonesia's reliance on imported crude oil. The government already allocated nearly a million hectares for ethanol production to blend with gasoline by 2027.

But electric vehicles are arriving faster and cheaper than anyone expected. The affordable EVs now hitting the market make the entire biofuel strategy unnecessary before it really begins.

Indonesia currently devotes huge areas of land to palm oil cultivation, and doubling down on biofuels would have meant matching that footprint. The environmental cost would have been staggering, with massive carbon emissions from deforestation and habitat loss for endangered species.

The shift to electric vehicles offers Indonesia a better path forward. EVs can slash oil imports without requiring a single tree to be cut down or hectare to be planted.

The timing couldn't be better. As electric vehicles become more affordable and accessible worldwide, countries like Indonesia can leapfrog the biofuel phase entirely and move straight to cleaner transportation solutions.
