IndyCar's Alex Palou Wins 5th Championship in 6 Years

Spanish racing driver Alex Palou just made history with his fifth IndyCar championship in six years, but the 29-year-old champion still pinches himself every single day.

"I never thought in my entire life that I would have an opportunity like this," Palou told OutKick this week. "I'm just trying to enjoy as much as I can because I know at some point it's going to end."

Palou's four consecutive championships with Chip Ganassi Racing match a record set by Sébastien Bourdais in the mid-2000s. In a sport famous for tight competition and demanding three completely different racing skills, staying on top is nearly impossible.

So what makes Palou's team different? It's the fire that never goes out, even after 18 total championships.

"There's people that are in my car who have been for each one of those 18 championships, and they still work as much as they can," Palou said. The mechanics and engineers treat every season like their first shot at glory.

What stands out most about Palou's success isn't just the trophies. It's how Chip Ganassi Racing built a culture where everyone's voice matters equally.

When Palou joined the team, he expected NASCAR legend Jimmie Johnson and IndyCar icon Scott Dixon to call all the shots. Instead, they treated him like an equal from day one.

"Whoever is fastest at practice, that's the leader of the team that day," Palou explained. No egos, no hierarchy, just the best ideas winning out.

That approach created an environment where a young driver from Spain could thrive alongside American legends. It proves that great teams don't need star systems or pecking orders.

The future looks even brighter for IndyCar and Palou. He recently tested the series' first new chassis in over a decade, the Dallara IR-28, set to debut in 2028.

"I would love to race it next year instead of in '28," he said with a laugh. The car performed so well in its first test that Palou believes it would beat current models by a wide margin.

He also played a starring role at last month's Freedom 250 Grand Prix in Washington, D.C., which drew massive TV ratings and showcased IndyCar to millions of new fans. "That was a 12 out of 10 as an event," Palou said.
