IndyCars Race DC Streets for America's 250th Birthday

Imagine standing near the White House and watching race cars fly past at 190 mph. That's exactly what's happening this weekend as Washington, D.C., transforms into a racetrack for America's 250th birthday celebration.

The Freedom 250 Grand Prix brings top IndyCar drivers to a specially designed 1.7-mile course through the heart of the nation's capital. This year's Indianapolis 500 winner Felix Rosenqvist and other elite racers will navigate seven turns, including a nearly half-mile straightaway on Pennsylvania Avenue.

The two-day event kicks off August 22 and offers free admission to anyone who wants to watch. Spectators will see some of the most iconic American landmarks serve as the backdrop for speeds that would normally land drivers in serious trouble.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy helped organize the unprecedented event. "What's more American than fast cars racing through the streets of our nation's capital?" he said, capturing the spirit of combining patriotism with pure adrenaline.

Rep. Erin Houchin from Indiana, the motorsports capital of America, got a preview ride around the track. She described the thrill of accelerating down the straightaway so fast it left her breathless, then turning to see the U.S. Capitol building flash by.

The race required months of planning and collaboration between racing officials and government agencies. At a July preview event, pit crews demonstrated their skills by changing all four tires and filling a gas tank in under six seconds while amazed onlookers watched.
