Internet Troll Drives 5 Hours to Remove Fly-Tipped Bike

When Gill started an Instagram account pretending to be her local woods, she never imagined an online insult fight would end in something beautiful.

The 50-year-old Sheffield hairdresser fell in love with Buck Wood after moving to Newfield Green. She loved the six-hectare woodland so much that she created an Instagram account to share photos, writing as if she were the woods themselves.

For weeks, nobody paid attention. Then Gill posted about a fly-tipped motorbike that had been rotting in the woods for months, calling it "poisoning her belly." The algorithm did its thing, and the post exploded.

Hundreds of strangers flooded her comments, calling her "sad" and "mental" for roleplaying as trees. Many told her to just move the bike herself, ignoring the fact that not everyone can haul a burnt-out motorbike alone.

So Gill fired back with the same energy, getting into a spat with a 28-year-old stranger named Jeff from Gateshead. He responded with a crude threat to drive down and remove it himself, just to prove a point.

Then something remarkable happened. Jeff actually showed up with his spaniel Howard and a rope, spending hours dragging the heavy bike through difficult terrain. He made a five-hour round trip to help a stranger he'd been insulting just days before.

"I still don't know exactly why I did it," Jeff admits. "But it started annoying me that loads of people were commenting about it and none of them had actually done anything, even though they lived in Sheffield."

Gill's phone lit up with photos of Jeff and Howard hauling the bike out. "I was literally crying," she says. "I just think it's an absolutely mint thing to do."
