Iowa Firefighters Raise $70K for Grain Rescue Trailer
Bremer County firefighters are raising $70,000 to build a specialized grain rescue trailer that could save lives during harvest season emergencies. The equipment will serve all county departments and respond to grain bin entrapments where victims can be fully buried in just 20 seconds.
When grain bin accidents happen on Iowa farms, firefighters have about 20 seconds before a trapped worker becomes fully engulfed.
That's why the Bremer County Firefighters Association is racing to raise $70,000 for a specialized agricultural rescue trailer before this fall's harvest season. Rob Edgar from the Waverly Fire Department and Emergency Management Coordinator Aaron Goodenbour want every department in the county equipped to handle these terrifying emergencies.
The idea sparked after the Fairbank Fire Department showed off their grain rescue trailer at a county meeting earlier this year. Departments across Bremer County immediately saw the need for their own unit.
"We don't have a lot of grain rescues," Edgar said. "But when we do, we have to be on our A-game and have the equipment ready to go."
The statistics make the urgency clear. Between 40% and 50% of grain entrapment incidents end in death, according to Purdue University research. Flowing grain traps workers at alarming speed, burying someone to the waist in just four seconds.

The new trailer will house a commercial-grade grain vacuum system that can remove grain from bins during entrapments. It will also carry rescue tubes, augers, hoses and everything needed for a complete rescue operation.
"If absolutely nobody else could respond, we could pull that trailer in and still do a full rescue without any other fire trucks around," Goodenbour said. The self-sufficient design also keeps heavy machinery like skid loaders away from victims and firefighters during rescues.
The Ripple Effect
The trailer won't just protect Bremer County's rural communities. Neighboring counties have already asked about mutual aid access once construction is complete.
The unit will serve Waverly, Readlyn, Denver, Tripoli, Plainfield, Frederika, Sumner, Janesville and surrounding areas. Between rescues, firefighters will use it for annual training to stay sharp on grain rescue procedures.
Edgar sees the project as a blueprint for future countywide emergency equipment. "It's not something every department needs to own individually, but together as a countywide response," he said.
Fundraising is already underway through the Bremer County Community Foundation, with brewery partnership nights and county fair promotions planned for summer. Construction won't begin until the full $70,000 is raised.
This fall, when Iowa farmers start bringing in the harvest, Bremer County's first responders will be ready with the tools they need to bring everyone home safely.
