Iraq and Saudi Arabia Advance Major Energy Partnership

Iraq is moving closer to a landmark energy deal with Saudi Arabia that could transform its electrical infrastructure and strengthen ties across the Middle East.

The Iraqi Ministry of Electricity announced Monday that talks regarding electrical interconnection with Saudi Arabia have made significant progress. The project, supported by the World Bank, will be a key topic when Prime Minister Ali Falih al-Zaidi visits Riyadh in the coming weeks.

Iraq currently imports energy from multiple sources to meet its power needs. The country receives 600 megawatts through its connection with Turkey, 50 megawatts via Jordan, 600 megawatts from other regional routes, and 1,400 megawatts from investment power plants in the Kurdistan Region.

Ministry spokesman Ahmed Turki Jiyad shared the update while also noting a temporary setback. The electrical interconnection with Kuwait, which reached 96 percent completion, has paused due to regional events. Officials hope work will resume once stability returns to the area.
