Iraqi Orphan Performs at World Cup Alongside Madonna

A baby discovered in a cardboard box in Baghdad is now performing on the world's biggest stage, proving that our beginnings don't define our destinations.

Emmanuel Kelly was found abandoned at a Baghdad orphanage run by Mother Teresa's nuns. Born with severely underdeveloped limbs, he spent his early years learning to navigate life with his friend Ahmed, who had a similar condition.

Their lives changed forever when Australian humanitarian worker Moira Kelly visited the orphanage in 1998. She was so moved by the boys' situation that she spent two years working to bring them to Australia for medical treatment.

In 2000, four-year-old Emmanuel and Ahmed arrived in Melbourne. After multiple surgeries and prosthetic fittings, they learned to walk, feed themselves, and live independently for the first time. Moira officially adopted both boys, and they became Australian citizens in 2009.

"We learned all the basic things I think that humans take for granted sometimes, like walking and feeding themselves," Emmanuel said in a recent FIFA interview. "Eventually I decided I wanted to pursue entertainment and music."

At 17, Emmanuel auditioned for Australia's X Factor with a stunning performance of John Lennon's "Imagine" that went viral online. Though he was eliminated after forgetting lyrics during one performance, his musical journey had just begun. His brother Ahmed found his own path to success, winning silver at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics in swimming.

In 2016, Coldplay's Chris Martin saw a video of Emmanuel performing and invited him onstage at their Melbourne concert. The two have been close friends ever since. Last year, Kelly opened for Coldplay's entire Australian stadium tour.

When FIFA asked Martin to curate this year's World Cup half-time show, he brought Emmanuel along. Kelly will perform alongside Shakira, BTS, Justin Bieber, and Madonna at Sunday's final between Spain and Argentina at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
