Ireland Hits 3 GW of Solar Power in Just Four Years

Ireland's solar revolution is picking up speed, and the numbers tell an impressive story.

The country just hit 3 gigawatts of installed solar capacity, a milestone that seemed distant just a few years ago. Ireland connected its first utility-scale solar farm to the grid in 2022. Four years later, the country has transformed its energy landscape.

"Three gigawatts is a big moment for Irish solar," said Ronan Power, CEO of Solar Ireland. The growth combines both large solar farms and rooftop installations across the nation.

The scale of this transformation touches everyday life. More than 200,000 Irish homes now generate their own electricity from rooftop panels. Businesses have joined the shift, powering operations with solar energy.

At peak times, Ireland's solar infrastructure can supply more than a third of the country's entire electricity demand. That's a significant chunk of power coming from clean, homegrown sources.

The pace of growth is accelerating. Ireland added the final few hundred megawatts needed to reach 3 GW in just the past few weeks. Government figures from June showed the country at 2.6 GW, meaning recent installations happened at record speed.

Grid-scale solar farms alone generated 1.1 gigawatt-hours of electricity in 2025, a 51% jump from 2024. The momentum shows no signs of slowing.

The Ripple Effect

This solar surge strengthens Ireland's energy security while cutting carbon emissions. Instead of relying on imported fossil fuels, Ireland is building a resilient power system rooted in renewable energy.

The economic impact extends beyond environmental benefits. Government investment, private developers, and community participation have created jobs and sparked innovation across the solar industry.

Ireland's Climate Minister Darragh O'Brien committed to continued support. "With continued investment in solar across homes, farms, businesses and large grid-scale projects, Ireland is building a growing source of homegrown, clean electricity," he said.

The country isn't stopping at 3 GW. The national target aims for 8 gigawatts of installed solar capacity by 2030. Developers are preparing for the next renewable energy auction in December, which will accelerate progress further.

Solar Ireland is pushing for the 2027 national budget to include funding for solar, battery storage, and crucial grid upgrades. These investments will unlock the full potential of the solar capacity already built.

Power emphasized the importance of the next steps. Budget 2027 needs to maximize the value of what developers have spent years building, he noted.

Ireland's story proves that rapid clean energy transformation is possible with the right combination of government support, industry commitment, and public participation.
