Ireland Hits 3 GW Solar Capacity, Powers 1/3 of Grid

Ireland's solar revolution hit two major milestones this week that nobody saw coming a decade ago.

The country surpassed 3,000 megawatts of installed solar capacity for the first time, Climate Minister Darragh O'Brien announced Thursday. Just days earlier, solar farms pumped out a record 1.3 gigawatts of power on the national grid, supplying more than one third of Ireland's total electricity at peak times on Monday.

The transformation happened fast. In 2016, Ireland had only 2 megawatts of solar capacity. Today, that number has multiplied 1,500 times.

"With continued investment in solar, Ireland is building a growing source of homegrown, clean electricity and strengthening our energy security," O'Brien said. The milestone includes everything from rooftop panels on homes to massive solar farms feeding the grid.

More than 200,000 Irish homes now have solar panels installed. Over 120,000 households received government grants to help cover the cost, and demand keeps climbing. Between January and July 2026, applications jumped 76% compared to the same period last year.

Schools got in on the action too. Free solar panels now sit atop 2,000 schools across Ireland, teaching the next generation about clean energy while cutting electricity bills.

The grid can handle the surge thanks to major upgrades from EirGrid and ESB Networks. Grid operator EirGrid is rolling out what it calls its most ambitious infrastructure program ever to connect even more renewable sources.

The Ripple Effect

Ireland's solar boom is part of a bigger clean energy story. The country now has more than 8 gigawatts of total renewable capacity connected to its network after adding roughly 5 gigawatts over the past decade. Wind power doubled during that time while solar grew from almost nothing to a major electricity source.

Households producing more power than they use can sell the extra electricity back to the grid through Ireland's microgeneration program. That means your roof can help power your neighbor's home on sunny days.

The government committed to funding solar grants through 2030, and Ireland's first grid scale solar farm only started operating in April 2022. Four years later, solar is already a cornerstone of the country's energy system.

One gigawatt of generation powers about 500,000 customers, which means Monday's record 1.3 gigawatt output lit up homes for roughly 650,000 people using nothing but sunshine.
