Ireland Hits 40% Renewable Energy as Solar Breaks Records

Ireland just hit a clean energy milestone that seemed impossible a few years ago.

Nearly 40% of the country's electricity came from renewable sources in May 2026, up from 33% the same month last year. The sunny weather helped solar power reach new heights, contributing 7.8% to Ireland's electricity mix compared to just 6% in May 2025.

The numbers tell a remarkable story. On May 25th, grid-scale solar panels generated 1,222 megawatts of power at peak times, shattering previous records. That follows Ireland crossing the 1 gigawatt solar threshold for the first time ever in April.

Wind energy added another 28% to the renewable mix throughout the month. Combined with solar, these clean sources are rapidly replacing fossil fuels on Ireland's power grid.

EirGrid, which operates Ireland's electricity network, now balances up to 75% renewable energy on the system at any given moment. The company is working toward handling 95% variable renewable power, a goal that would have seemed science fiction just a decade ago.

The solar surge is creating an unexpected pattern. EirGrid noticed that electricity demand looks nearly identical at midday and midnight on sunny days. Rooftop solar panels on homes and businesses are quietly meeting daytime power needs, flattening the traditional demand curve.

Natural gas still provided 41% of May's electricity, and another 21% came through interconnection imports from neighboring countries. But those percentages are shrinking as more renewable capacity comes online.

Ireland's progress shows how quickly energy systems can transform when technology and policy align. The country is proving that small nations can lead on climate action, creating a playbook others can follow.

Every new solar panel and wind turbine moves Ireland closer to energy independence while cutting carbon emissions. The May records demonstrate that renewable energy isn't just environmentally necessary, it's becoming the backbone of modern power systems.
