Ireland Solar Applications Up 65% in Energy Upgrade Boom

Irish families are betting big on sunshine, and the numbers prove it.

Applications for Ireland's home energy upgrade program skyrocketed 96% in early 2026, with solar panels leading the charge. The Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland processed more than 29,000 applications from January to March, and over 10,000 of those were families wanting to install solar panels on their roofs.

That's a 65% jump from last year for solar alone. Even in a country famous for rain and clouds, Irish homeowners see the light when it comes to cutting energy costs.

The program isn't just about solar. Heat pump applications surged 95%, and attic insulation requests rose 81%. While these percentages look impressive, solar still dominates in raw numbers, showing it's becoming the go-to choice for Irish families looking to save money and help the planet.

The Irish government allocated €640 million to support 73,000 home energy upgrades in 2026. They're not just helping homeowners save on bills. They've added special grants specifically designed to help families struggling with high energy costs, and over 150 applications came in within weeks of launch.

The Ripple Effect

When a quarter of a million homes upgrade their energy systems, everyone benefits. Since 2019, that's exactly how many Irish households have made the switch to cleaner, cheaper energy.

Lower energy bills mean families have more money for what matters. Fewer fossil fuels mean cleaner air for kids to breathe. And as more neighbors see solar panels popping up on rooftops around them, the clean energy movement becomes contagious.

Ireland added 1 gigawatt of solar power in 2025 alone. That's enough to power tens of thousands of homes. Minister Darragh O'Brien pointed to the "very clear and positive upward trend" in applications, noting overall upgrade requests jumped 186% compared to last year's first quarter.

CEO William Walsh of the SEAI acknowledged what's driving the boom: high energy costs have families looking for solutions, and they're finding them in their own backyards.
