Ireland's Solar Power Jumps 58% in One Summer

Ireland's solar power revolution hit a major milestone this summer, with solar energy generation soaring 58% compared to the same months last year.

The country's electricity grid operator, EirGrid, revealed that solar power made up 7.7% of Ireland's electricity in August 2026. That might sound small, but it's a huge leap from just 5% in August 2025.

The summer months tell an even more impressive story. From June through August, Ireland's solar panels generated 692 gigawatt hours of electricity, compared to only 439 gigawatt hours during the same period in 2025.

August brought two record-breaking moments. On August 11, solar power hit 1.25 gigawatts at midday. Then on August 24, it climbed even higher to 1.3 gigawatts, enough to power over a million homes in that instant.

These peaks came just months after Ireland crossed the 1 gigawatt threshold for the first time ever in April. The country has now broken its own solar record multiple times in just four months.

Overall, renewables powered 29% of Ireland's electricity in August. Wind energy led the way at 18%, while solar continues climbing rapidly as more panels come online across the country.

The Ripple Effect

Ireland's solar surge shows what's possible when a country commits to clean energy, even in a place not known for endless sunshine. The island nation gets far less sun than Mediterranean countries, yet it's still making solar work at scale.

This progress ripples beyond Ireland's shores. As solar technology proves effective in cloudier climates, it gives hope to other northern countries questioning whether solar makes sense for them.

The rapid growth also means cleaner air for Irish families and less reliance on imported gas, which currently still provides 42% of the country's electricity. Every percentage point gained by solar is one less dependent on fossil fuels.

Diarmaid Gillespie from EirGrid notes that solar will naturally contribute less as autumn arrives and days shorten. But even in winter's depths, those panels will keep generating power during daylight hours, chipping away at carbon emissions one sunny moment at a time.
