Island Town Gives Every Graduate a Scholarship
On Vashon Island, Washington, 89 high school seniors applied for scholarships this year, and every single one will receive money for college. This small community has spent nearly 40 years making sure no graduate who asks for help gets left behind.
When Ellen Call moved to Vashon Island in 1994, she heard something that stopped her in her tracks. Every graduating senior who applied for a scholarship would get one, guaranteed.
"I'd never heard anything like it in my life," Call said. She now serves as treasurer for Vashon Community Scholarships, the organization making it happen.
The promise is simple but powerful. Apply, and your community will support you. This year, all 89 seniors who submitted applications will receive scholarship money to help with college costs.
The organization started small in 1987, awarding $12,000 to 27 students. Last year, they gave out more than $300,000 in scholarships, with each student receiving an average of nearly $2,700.
The magic happens through matchmaking. After students submit their applications in January, volunteers and donors read through notebooks filled with essays, grades, and goals. They pair students with scholarships that fit best, like assembling a puzzle where every piece matters.

Some scholarships come from businesses or memorial funds. Others come from community members who want to give back. But the general fund makes the mission possible, filling gaps to ensure every student gets at least $1,500.
Last year alone, the general fund awarded 47 scholarships totaling $45,700.
The Ripple Effect
The organization creates a beautiful cycle of gratitude. Some donors today received scholarships 30 years ago when they graduated from Vashon High School. Now they're paying it forward to a new generation.
Co-President Anna Sander received scholarships herself as a student. "Every little bit made a huge difference heading off to college with student loans and all those big financial burdens," she said.
At a recent fundraiser, people approached Sander with memories and gratitude. Some had received scholarships decades ago. Others had donated for years. All felt connected to something bigger than themselves.
The community is doubling down on this tradition. On March 7, Vashon will host its first "One Big Day" fundraising event, with businesses displaying QR codes for easy donations and private events happening across the island.
For nearly four decades, this small island has shown that when communities invest in their young people, everyone wins.
