Israel Launches National AI Supercomputer for Startups

Israel just turned on a powerful new engine for innovation: a national AI supercomputer that gives local tech companies and researchers affordable access to the computing power they need to build the future.

The Israel Innovation Authority announced Sunday that the supercomputer is now live and operational. Over the coming years, it will distribute 1,000 Nvidia B200 accelerators at discounted rates, with 70% going to tech companies developing large AI models and 30% reserved for academic research.

For Israeli startups, this solves a massive problem. More than 90% of tech workers in Israel already use AI, and roughly 22,000 companies have integrated it into their products. But until now, Israel had no AI-focused supercomputers of its own.

That meant companies faced long waiting times and sky-high costs to rent computing power from global cloud providers. Training a single advanced AI model can cost millions and take months of waiting for access to the right hardware.

The new infrastructure changes that equation entirely. Israeli companies can now train their models faster, cheaper, and without depending on foreign systems. They just need to prove their innovation is worth it.

"Those who will receive the GPUs will be chosen based on excellence," said Dror Bin, CEO of the Israel Innovation Authority. Selection criteria include how groundbreaking the technology is, its economic potential, and whether the team can actually execute on their vision.

AI cloud provider Nebius won the contract to build and manage the infrastructure. Companies will need to commit to using at least 16 accelerators for one to six months, while academic groups can access a minimum of eight.

The Ripple Effect

This supercomputer represents more than just faster chips and better access. It's part of Israel's broader strategy to stay competitive as AI reshapes the global economy.

The Innovation Authority has spent five years building out the country's AI research and development infrastructure. They've created national data repositories in healthcare and agriculture, launched programs to expand the AI workforce, and invested in the talent pipeline needed to turn cutting-edge research into real-world products.

The goal isn't just to develop impressive AI technologies but to ensure Israel has everything needed to deploy them effectively: infrastructure, skilled workers, and a supportive regulatory environment.

Officials acknowledge that maintaining leadership requires sustained investment. As worldwide demand for AI computing resources continues to surge, countries that control their own infrastructure gain a strategic advantage in the race to innovate.

Applications for computing time are expected to open in the coming weeks for academic researchers, with startup allocations already underway. If demand outpaces the initial 1,000 accelerators, the Innovation Authority says it may expand the program.

Israel's bet is simple: give the best innovators the tools they need, and they'll build technologies that benefit everyone.
