Israeli and Palestinian Women March Barefoot in Rome

🦸 Hero Alert

Hundreds of Israeli and Palestinian mothers are walking barefoot through Rome this week, demanding peace talks and women's voices at the negotiating table. Their joint "Mothers' Call" includes meetings with diplomats and the Pope.

When a four-year-old boy in Israel keeps asking his grandmother "I want home, I want home," she knows it's time to march for something better than endless war.

This week, hundreds of women from Israeli peace group Women Wage Peace and Palestinian Women of the Sun are walking barefoot through Rome together. They're launching "The Mothers' Call," a joint initiative demanding real peace negotiations between Israelis and Palestinians.

The barefoot walk carries deep meaning. "We want to feel the ground, it is soaked with the blood of our children, and from that pain and grief, we want to bring hope," said Dr. Yael Admi, chair of Women Wage Peace.

Women Wage Peace has grown into Israel's largest grassroots peace movement over the past 10 years, with more than 44,000 active members. Now they're joining forces with their Palestinian counterparts to push for what they call "a clear political horizon."

The women aren't waiting for permission to speak up. "Women are often told to wait, that it's not the time to talk about it, to wait until the war is over, but the war is not over, it keeps coming back," Dr. Admi explained.

Throughout the week, these Israeli and Palestinian mothers will meet with Italian Parliament members and have an audience with the Pope. They're asking world leaders to support negotiations, but they're not demanding one specific solution.

Instead, they want women included in the decision-making process. Dr. Yael Braudo-Bahat explained that when women come to the table, "they hear the voices of the communities, it's about the communities, not just about borders."

The group points to existing peace agreements between Israel and neighboring countries Egypt and Jordan as proof that peace is possible. They're calling on leaders to learn from these successes.

Why This Inspires

These mothers refuse to accept that wanting peace makes them naive. As Dr. Admi put it, "Naive are the ones who think that doing the same thing over and over again will give them better results."

Activist Orna Ashkenazi is marching so her grandchildren can safely return home. She doesn't want to wait until her four-year-old grandson turns 18 and becomes a soldier before peace arrives.

The women describe their role as helpers, not critics. "We are willing to do whatever it takes, so we invite the leaders to be assisted by us," said Dr. Braudo-Bahat.

Their message is simple but powerful: leaders have plenty of peace plans sitting in drawers, and what's needed now is courage and will to implement them.

These mothers believe this moment of crisis can become an opportunity to finally give peace, security, and freedom to all children in the region.
