Israel's 2,000 Kidney Donors Set New World Record

More than 2,000 people in Israel have given one of their kidneys to complete strangers, setting a new world record for the largest kidney donation network ever recorded.

The milestone represents years of life-saving generosity coordinated by Matnat Chaim (Gift of Life), an organization that helps connect voluntary kidney donors with patients in need. President Isaac Herzog attended a celebration ceremony in Jerusalem honoring the donors and recipients whose lives were transformed.

The recognition didn't come easily. Guinness World Records initially refused to accept the submission, citing a policy implemented in November 2023 that blocked all record applications from Israel and Palestinian territories during what they called a "sensitive" time.

But the organization reversed course after widespread criticism. Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar announced the decision, saying the donors would "finally receive the celebration they deserve."
