Akshay Sharma crossing the Ironman Malaysia finish line after completing triathlon

IT Worker Becomes Ironman in 3 Years Training at 4am

🦸 Hero Alert

Akshay Sharma went from a sedentary IT desk job to completing a grueling 226-kilometer Ironman triathlon in just three years. His journey started with one uncomfortable realization during a Christmas trip that changed everything.

While Bengaluru slept at 4am, Akshay Sharma was already training for what seemed impossible. Three years earlier, he was just another IT professional stuck in a sedentary routine, but a Christmas 2022 trip to Chikkamagaluru changed his life forever.

Meeting Himalayan trekkers on that trip made Akshay question his comfort zone. "I realized that the body and mind are capable of far more than I had ever demanded of them," he says.

Starting January 2023, Akshay committed to daily stair climbs, hill repeats, long runs, cycling, meditation and recovery sessions. He squeezed every training session before and after work, never missing a day.

Months of discipline paid off when he completed the 12-day Everest Base Camp trek. He later summited Lobuche Peak, where patience became his greatest teacher.

Then a colleague casually mentioned completing an Ironman triathlon. His friend Sagar remembers Akshay's reaction: "When he first told me about the Goa Ironman, I laughed."

But Akshay had already set his next goal. He trained with three swims, three rides, three runs and three strength sessions every single week.

Swimming in Goa's open waters taught him to stay calm through chaos. "I stopped, floated for five minutes, and focused on visual cues like coconut trees and huts to guide me back," he recalls.

Akshay learned that nutrition was just as crucial as the physical training. "Triathlon is not just swimming, biking or running. Nutrition is the fourth discipline," he explains.

Why This Inspires

On November 1, 2025, Akshay faced Ironman Malaysia: a 3.8-kilometer swim, 180-kilometer bike ride and full marathon. He crossed the finish line in 15 hours and 40 minutes, just under the official cutoff.

Hearing the words "You are an Ironman" proved that discipline and consistency can transform ordinary beginnings into extraordinary outcomes. What started as an uncomfortable realization on a Christmas trip became a complete life transformation.

Now Akshay has his eyes set on Mount Everest. His advice for anyone hesitating to start their own journey is simple: "Do not wait to feel ready. The first step does not need to be perfect; it only needs to happen."
