
Italian Charger Powers EVs to 80% in Just 11 Minutes

Imagine charging your electric car faster than ordering coffee at a drive-through. Italian manufacturer Alpitronic just made that possible with a charging system so powerful it can restore hundreds of miles of range in the time it takes to stretch your legs.
The HYC1000 system unveiled in Berlin this week delivers up to 1 megawatt of power across eight charging stations simultaneously. That's enough electricity to charge eight vehicles at once, with power automatically shifting to wherever it's needed most.
During a live demonstration with a Mercedes-AMG sports car, the charger reached 620 kilowatts of continuous power. The car charged from 10% to 80% battery in around 11 minutes, and just 10 minutes of charging added more than 280 miles of range.
The secret lies in advanced silicon carbide power technology that operates at over 98% efficiency. Each of the eight power modules delivers 125 kilowatts, and the system intelligently distributes power in precise increments based on what each vehicle can handle.
Mercedes engineer Johannes Nab explained that their vehicle uses Formula 1-inspired battery cooling technology to maintain these extreme charging speeds. "We can maintain high power for several minutes, not just a short peak," he said during the demonstration.

The system works with voltages from 150 to 1,000 volts and can operate in extreme conditions, from minus 22 degrees Fahrenheit to 131 degrees. Alpitronic designed three different dispenser types to work with current charging standards and future megawatt systems for commercial trucks.

This charging breakthrough arrives just as range anxiety remains the biggest barrier to electric vehicle adoption. Highway charging stations equipped with this technology could transform long-distance travel, making cross-country road trips in EVs as convenient as conventional vehicles.
The distributed power architecture means charging station operators can install fewer power cabinets while serving more vehicles. As demand shifts throughout the day, the system automatically redirects power where drivers need it most, making efficient use of expensive infrastructure.
Alpitronic is targeting highway charging hubs, commercial truck fleets, and popular destinations where travelers want to minimize charging stops. The faster turnaround times could also reduce lines at busy charging stations during peak travel periods.
The technology demonstrates how far electric vehicle infrastructure has advanced in just a few years. What once took an hour now takes minutes, bringing the EV charging experience closer to the familiar gas station stop. That convenience could be the final push millions of drivers need to make the electric switch.
