Italy Breaks Medal Record at Home Paralympics

Italy just made Paralympic history in front of their home crowd, breaking a medal record that stood since 1994.

On Day 7 of the Milano Cortina 2026 Paralympic Winter Games, the host nation clinched its 14th medal, surpassing the 13-medal haul from Lillehammer three decades ago. The Italians now sit third overall with six golds, seven silvers, and one bronze.

Italian sit-skier Rene de Silvestro captured gold in the men's giant slalom, narrowly beating Dutch competitor Niels de Langen. "It's really emotional in front of the crowd, a home crowd: my people, my friends, my family," De Silvestro said after adding gold to his earlier silver medal.

The celebrations continued in Para snowboard, where veteran Jacopo Luchini finally struck gold in his third Paralympic Games. The Italian topped two young Chinese athletes in the banked slalom, fulfilling a dream he'd chased for years.

Fellow Italian Emanuel Perathoner, competing in his first Paralympics after racing in the Olympics, won his second gold of the Games. The fairytale debut couldn't have scripted better for the hometown hero.

American Noah Elliott delivered one of the day's most powerful moments, topping the podium in snowboard banked slalom after competing through severe injury at the previous Games. "This is my redemption Games because I'm finally healthy again," Elliott explained, revealing he had competed at Beijing 2022 with his femur bone protruding through his amputated leg.

Twenty-year-old Kate Delson upset reigning champion Brenna Huckaby to win women's banked slalom gold. "Now I get to share the podium with two of the biggest legends of this sport," the young American said.
