Italy Hosts 2026 Winter Olympics Across Historic Cities

The world's best winter athletes are gathering in Italy this week for an Olympics unlike any other, with competitions spread across stunning mountain towns and historic cities in what promises to be the most accessible Winter Games ever.

Starting Friday, 3,500 athletes from around the globe will compete in 116 events across northern Italy's most beautiful locations. Milan, Italy's second-largest city, shares hosting duties with Cortina, an upscale resort nestled in the stunning Dolomites mountains.

For the first time in Olympic history, the opening ceremony will unfold across multiple locations simultaneously. Milan's iconic San Siro Stadium, home to 80,000 roaring soccer fans, will anchor the main celebration. This marks Italy's fourth time hosting the Olympics and its third Winter Games, following successful runs in 1956 and 2006. The decision to spread events across multiple regions means more communities get to participate directly in Olympic history, creating lasting economic and tourism benefits for smaller mountain towns that might never host such events on their own.

China's freestyle skiing sensation Eileen Gu, already a two-time Olympic champion, leads another strong international contingent.

The closing ceremony on February 22 will take place in Verona's historic Olympic Arena, bringing the games full circle across Italy's rich cultural landscape. Then the Paralympic Winter Games begin March 6, continuing the celebration of athletic excellence.
