Italy Installs 6.4 GW of Solar Power in 2025
Italy added enough solar panels in 2025 to power millions of homes, marking another year of impressive growth in renewable energy. The country now gets over half its renewable electricity from the sun.
Italy just proved that going green can happen faster than anyone expected, installing 6.4 gigawatts of new solar panels throughout 2025.
That's enough clean energy to power roughly 3.2 million homes. The country's grid operator Terna released the data, showing Italy's steady climb toward a cleaner energy future.
The numbers tell a remarkable story of momentum. Italy added just 0.94 gigawatts of solar in 2021, then 2.48 gigawatts in 2022, and 5.23 gigawatts in 2023. While 2025's total was slightly down from 2024's record 6.8 gigawatts, the overall trend shows explosive growth in just four years.
Solar power now accounts for 52% of Italy's total renewable energy capacity. The country has installed panels across more than 2 million locations, creating a combined capacity of 43.5 gigawatts.
Italia Solare, the country's solar energy association, believes the actual 2025 numbers could be even higher. "Our estimates indicate that last year's capacity could have been higher, potentially exceeding 7 gigawatts," a spokesperson told PV Magazine Italy.

The outlook keeps getting brighter. The association expects continued growth through 2026 and 2027, powered by upcoming renewable energy auctions that will drive more installations.
Italy also made major strides in energy storage last year. The country added nearly 146,000 new battery systems integrated with renewable energy sources, providing 1 gigawatt of power and 1.83 gigawatt-hours of storage capacity.
The Ripple Effect
Italy's solar surge shows how quickly countries can transform their energy mix when they commit to change. Every gigawatt of solar power means cleaner air for Italian families and less dependence on imported fossil fuels. The growth also creates thousands of jobs in installation, maintenance, and manufacturing across the country.
Other nations watching Italy's success now have a roadmap for their own renewable transitions. When one country proves solar can scale this quickly, it inspires bolder climate action everywhere.
The sun keeps shining on Italy's clean energy future, and the rest of the world is taking notes.
