Italy's Solar Power Jumps 21% During Record Heatwave

When temperatures soared 6°C above normal during Italy's brutal July heatwave, the country's solar panels were there to help.

Solar energy production jumped 21% compared to July 2025, generating enough extra electricity to power hundreds of thousands of homes during the month when air conditioners worked overtime. Italy's electricity demand hit an all-time monthly high as people cranked up cooling systems to survive temperatures nearly 2°C hotter than the previous decade's average.

The timing couldn't have been better. Italy added 6,874 megawatts of solar capacity over the past year, bringing the country's total to 47,300 megawatts by the end of July. That's roughly equivalent to adding 50 large power plants worth of clean energy in just 12 months.

Terna, Italy's power grid operator, reported that solar alone provided enough extra electricity in July to offset most of the decline from wind and hydropower, which both struggled during the hot, dry conditions. Renewables still covered 41.5% of the nation's electricity needs during the month.

The Bright Side

Italy's solar success story shows how investing in renewable energy pays off during climate extremes. While the heatwave pushed electricity demand to record levels, those rooftop panels and solar farms helped prevent even greater reliance on fossil fuel plants.

The country now has nearly 950,000 energy storage installations with 19.43 gigawatt-hours of battery capacity, allowing solar power collected during sunny days to be used when demand peaks. Industrial electricity use also grew by 2.1%, suggesting Italy's economy is expanding while its clean energy infrastructure keeps pace.

On July 15, when demand peaked at 58 gigawatts, the expanded solar network helped Italy meet the challenge without major disruptions. It's proof that preparing for a hotter future means building more renewable capacity now.
