Jack Draper Stuns Djokovic After 8-Month Injury Recovery

Jack Draper just proved that setbacks can fuel the greatest comebacks.

The British tennis star fought back from an eight-month injury layoff to defeat his childhood idol Novak Djokovic 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 at Indian Wells. Playing only his second tournament since recovering from an arm injury, Draper called beating the 24-time Grand Slam champion "mind-blowing."

"I've watched him since I was a kid, idolizing him," Draper told BBC Sport after the two-hour, 35-minute battle. The victory came after Djokovic had beaten him in their only previous meeting at Wimbledon in 2021.

The match delivered drama worthy of a Hollywood script. Draper lost a grueling 26-shot rally filled with extraordinary drop shots, lobs, and smashes in the deciding set. He then broke Djokovic's serve to take a 5-4 lead and had a chance to close out the match.

But serving for the win, Draper faltered and got broken back. The match went to a tiebreak with both players bent double from exhaustion.

This time, the young Brit regrouped. He took the tiebreak 7-5 to secure the biggest win of his comeback journey.

"It's something I will probably look back on in a few months and think this is a real big moment for me," Draper said. Even Djokovic, who ran out of gas after that epic 26-shot rally, praised his opponent: "He is playing at a great level. Just, overall, a great player, great guy."

Fellow Brit Cameron Norrie also advanced at Indian Wells, winning his match without dropping a set. The 2021 champion at this tournament credited an "unreal" three-hour practice session with world number two Jannik Sinner for setting his competitive tone.

Draper's comeback reminds us that the journey back from hardship often leads somewhere even better than where we started.
