Jack Hughes Heads to Olympics After 6-Year International Break

Jack Hughes last wore a USA jersey in meaningful competition six years ago as a teenager. Next month in Milan, he'll step onto the ice as an NHL superstar ready to chase Olympic gold.

The New Jersey Devils center hasn't played major international hockey since the 2019 World Juniors, when he was still in the U.S. National Development Program. Now 23 and one of the league's elite players, he gets his shot at the sport's biggest stage.

"To be able to play in the Olympics, I mean, that's the biggest stage," Hughes told Fox News Digital. "Something I'm looking forward to."

Hughes got a taste of best-on-best hockey at last year's 4 Nations tournament, where Team USA faced Canada, Finland, and Sweden. The speed and skill level shocked him. Every tiny mistake mattered. Every small play could change everything.

The Olympics will bring 12 nations competing for gold, making it an even bigger test. Hughes might watch "Miracle" while in Milan to get his patriotic energy flowing. Like most American hockey players, he grew up watching the legendary 1980 Olympic upset.

"Every single player grew up watching the Miracle on Ice," Hughes said. "That's where you want to be a part of."

"You can't look past your NHL schedule, because that's the most important thing," Hughes said. "But I think it's all really exciting."
