Jaden Smith's Free Vegan Food Truck Feeds LA's Homeless

Instead of throwing a party for his 21st birthday, Jaden Smith launched a food truck to feed people experiencing homelessness. The I Love You Restaurant parks on Los Angeles' Skid Row, serving free vegan meals to anyone who needs them.

Smith partnered with world-class chef Tabitha Leeper to create healthy menu options for people facing food insecurity. "Our founder believes everyone deserves access to the healthiest food options, no matter their financial situation," the restaurant's website explains.

The food truck serves up to 500 hot meals at each activation, along with bottles of JUST Water (Smith's sustainable water company) and donated clothing. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Smith added masks and hand sanitizer to the essentials distributed to those in need.

While homeless people eat free, others can purchase meals at prices above cost. The extra money pays for the person behind them, creating a pay-it-forward system that keeps the operation running.

The food truck has traveled beyond Skid Row to serve communities across the country. A map on the I Love You website shows activations in Harlem, New York, and other Southern California locations with high levels of housing and food insecurity.

The Ripple Effect

Smith's vision extends beyond filling stomachs. The restaurant's name comes from research by Japanese author Dr. Emoto, who demonstrated that the words "I Love You" create positive changes in organic matter at the molecular level.

Psychologists have also proven that hearing "I Love You" positively impacts the brain. Smith hopes spreading those words through his restaurant brings peace and happiness to the Skid Row community.

The operation runs on corporate partnerships and community support rather than traditional funding. Supporters can purchase occasional merchandise drops online, with proceeds funding more meals and resources.

Smith dreams of opening a brick-and-mortar location someday to expand services. For now, people can follow I Love You on social media to find the food truck and volunteer opportunities.

"I Love You is for the people, not funded by the people," Smith said in a recent TikTok, proving that privileged platforms can spark real change when used with purpose.
