Jakarta Race Targets 8,000 Runners, 24,780 kg CO₂ Cut

A running race in Indonesia is proving that getting healthy and fighting climate change can happen with every step.

PLN Electric Run 2026, launching November 8 at Indonesia Convention Exhibition in BSD, expects 8,000 runners to participate while cutting 24,780 kilograms of CO₂ emissions. The event carries the theme "Powering Our Green Future," turning a simple fitness activity into measurable environmental progress.

The race offers three distances: 5K, 10K, and half marathon categories for runners of all abilities. What makes this year special is the organizers' application for World Athletics Label certification for the half marathon course, potentially making it the first internationally recognized race in South Tangerang.

PT PLN, Indonesia's state electric company, officially launched the event on July 24 alongside media partner KG Media. The partnership extends beyond race day, with PLN supporting women workers through environmental initiatives that improve their livelihoods while promoting clean energy practices.

Indonesian runner Agus Prayogo highlighted what sets this race apart from typical athletic events. "Few running events encourage participants to embrace a more environmentally friendly lifestyle," he said, praising how PLN Electric Run combines top-tier race facilities with genuine carbon reduction goals.

The course meets AIMS international standards, earning full support from the Indonesian Athletics Association. Vice Chairman Tigor Tanjung sees the race strengthening Indonesia's reputation for hosting world-class athletic competitions while attracting international participants.

The race demonstrates how large-scale events can multiply their positive impact beyond their primary purpose. By calculating and actively reducing carbon emissions, PLN Electric Run creates a template for sustainable event planning across Indonesia.

Sustainability partner Rekosistem helps translate the environmental mission into practical action. CEO Ernest Christian explained that the collaboration aims to inspire young Indonesians to reduce their carbon footprint through simple daily choices, using the race as an accessible entry point for environmental awareness.

The event grew from previous editions that showed increasing public enthusiasm each year. This expansion to 8,000 participants reflects Indonesia's rising interest in combining personal wellness with planetary health.

As part of corporate social responsibility efforts, PT PLN and PLN Icon Plus use the race to make clean energy benefits more visible and accessible to everyday people. The companies view athletic participation as a natural bridge to conversations about renewable energy and sustainable living.
