Jake Horan Named Top Baseball Executive in First Year

A 29-year-old returned home to manage his local baseball team and turned their season into a championship run. Now he's been named Baseball Executive of the Year in just his first season.

Jake Horan came back to the Wisconsin community where he grew up and made his first year as general manager count.

The 29-year-old led the Eau Claire Express to the best record in the Northwoods League this summer, with six players making the all-star team and the club winning their first playoff series. For his efforts, Horan was named the league's Baseball Executive of the Year.

"It was a little bit of a shock when I found out about it," Horan said. "I didn't expect it, being my first year."

Horan graduated from Chippewa Falls McDonell High School in 2015 and jumped at the chance to return to the area. The homecoming proved perfect timing as the Express qualified for the postseason after winning the second half title.

But Horan was quick to spread the credit around. "It wasn't just me," he said. "I attribute our success to our owners, our staff, our coaches, our players, our host families and everyone who was involved with the Express."

Express owner Craig Toycen sees what most fans don't. "I'm especially proud of Jake because I get to see the work behind the scenes," Toycen said. "The long hours, the commitment to excellence, and the passion he brings to the Express are things most people never see."

Why This Inspires

Young professionals moving back to their hometowns often wonder if they can make a real impact. Horan showed that coming home doesn't mean settling for less. His success proves that local expertise, genuine passion, and hard work can transform a community institution in record time.

The Express continues improving historic Carson Park with new restrooms being added this offseason. Attendance ticked up during Horan's first year, and the team is already planning to build on their 2026 success.

"We hope to have an even better 2027," Horan said.
