Jamaica School Opens $20M Clean Energy Innovation Hub

Students at St. Mary Technical High School in Highgate, Jamaica, now have access to a world-class renewable energy laboratory that rivals industry standards. The Innovation Hub for Electrical and Renewable Energy officially opened on February 6, marking a major milestone in the country's push to modernize technical education.

The $20 million investment came through Jamaica's Ministry of Education Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Expansion Plan. It transforms a program that started in 2010 with basic solar equipment into a state-of-the-art training center where students gain hands-on experience with technology they'll use in real jobs.

St. Mary Technical High was chosen as the flagship site for good reason. The school has a strong track record in industrial education and already helps train students from other schools across the region.

"TVET is the engine to drive this country forward," said Dr. Kasan Troupe, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, at the opening ceremony. She reminded students that the facility represents a deep investment in their potential to compete globally.

The new lab gives students practical training that mirrors what they'll encounter in the renewable energy workforce. They're learning to install solar panels, maintain electrical systems, and troubleshoot clean energy technology using the same equipment professionals use every day.
