Japan Discovers Missing Cell That Regrows Hair Naturally

After nearly 20 years of research, scientists in Japan have cracked a stubborn mystery: what makes hair follicles regrow completely.

A team from Riken research institute and Tokyo startup OrganTech discovered a previously unknown cell type that turns out to be essential for the full hair growth cycle. Without it, scientists could start the process but couldn't keep hair regrowing and shedding naturally like it does on our heads.

The researchers combined three cell types in lab-grown skin on mice and watched something remarkable happen. The hair went through its complete natural cycle of growing, resting, shedding, and regrowing, over and over again. No living body required.

The missing piece? Cells called around-bulge mesenchyme (ABM) cells, which hang out near hair follicles. These cells trigger hair to wake up from its resting phase and start growing again. They also help the follicle extend deeper into the skin as new hair pushes upward.

Team leader Takashi Tsuji had previously succeeded in generating hair follicle basics using two cell types back in 2012. But those attempts only worked after transplantation, when other mystery cells from surrounding tissue joined the party. That hinted something was missing from the recipe.

The new study also revealed something surprising about how hair grows. The follicle doesn't just push hair up like a piston. Instead, the base of the follicle actually moves downward into deeper skin layers while the hair shaft grows upward, like an anchor dropping as a flag rises.

Why This Inspires

This discovery matters because current hair loss treatments mostly just delay the inevitable. Drugs like minoxidil slow thinning but don't bring follicles back to life once they're gone.

The new approach could change that completely. Doctors could take these regeneration cells from a patient's own scalp, grow more of them in a lab, and transplant them back into thinning areas. Instead of managing hair loss, people could potentially reverse it.

The findings appeared in the journal Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications this week. While human trials are still ahead, the team has shown that complete hair regeneration in a lab setting is possible with the right cellular ingredients.

For the 80 million Americans and countless others worldwide experiencing hair loss, that's a future worth waiting for.
