Japan Food Exports Hit $11B Despite Trade Barriers

Japanese farmers, fishers and food producers just proved that great taste can triumph over trade wars.

Despite facing new US tariffs and ongoing Chinese restrictions on seafood, Japan's agricultural exports soared 12.8% in 2025 to reach an all-time high of $11 billion. The growth marks the country's 13th consecutive year of rising food exports.

The United States became Japan's biggest customer for the second year running, with purchases climbing nearly 14% to $2.8 billion. American appetites for Japanese green tea and beef stayed strong even after new tariffs kicked in last April.

China also bounced back as a major buyer, with exports growing 7% to $1.8 billion. That's a remarkable turnaround from 2024, when Chinese purchases had plunged 29% after Beijing banned Japanese seafood over concerns about treated water releases from the Fukushima nuclear plant.

Chinese buyers lifted restrictions midway through 2025, and shoppers there returned to purchasing ornamental koi fish, Japanese beer and timber logs. Some seafood limits remain in place, but the overall recovery signals renewed confidence.

The Ripple Effect

The export boom reflects something bigger than just trade numbers. Growing global interest in Japanese cuisine, boosted by tourists who discovered the food while visiting Japan, created new demand across multiple countries.

Health-conscious consumers worldwide have especially embraced Japanese staples like matcha green tea. The vibrant green powder has become a café favorite from Los Angeles to London, introducing millions to traditional Japanese ingredients.

Kazuyoshi Nakasugi from Japan's Ministry of Agriculture credits the success to expanded trade channels and record-breaking exports to countries including South Korea. The momentum shows how cultural appreciation can open economic doors even when political barriers try to close them.

Japan's food producers didn't just overcome obstacles in 2025; they turned challenges into opportunities by reaching new customers and expanding in existing markets.
