The Japan Football Association announced this week that Shunsuke Nakamura, one of the country's most celebrated players, will join the coaching staff under head coach Hajime Moriyasu. At 47, Nakamura brings two World Cup appearances and a storied European career to the bench.

Nakamura made his name as a left-footed specialist who dazzled fans at the 2006 and 2010 World Cups. His stint with Scotland's Celtic earned him league MVP honors, proving Japanese talent could shine on Europe's biggest stages.

Japan has every reason to feel confident right now. In March, they shocked the soccer world by defeating both Scotland and England 1-0 in back-to-back matches. BBC's coverage didn't sugarcoat it: "England was completely outplayed by Japan."

Coach Moriyasu has been vocal about his World Cup ambitions despite skeptics. He knows many Japanese fans think victory is impossible, but he's positioning his team as the tournament's ultimate dark horse.
