
Japan Launches Robot Ambulances for Humanoid Repairs

When a humanoid robot breaks down at work, Tokyo now has a solution that looks surprisingly familiar: an ambulance.
Japanese tech company GMO Internet Group just unveiled a specially designed van that rushes to malfunctioning robots like paramedics respond to emergencies. The vehicle carries engineers, repair equipment, spare parts, and a fully functional replacement humanoid ready to step in.
"The humanoid 'ambulance' carries the replacement humanoid to the site and replaces it with the damaged humanoid," explained Shota Takizawa, an engineer at GMO Air. If the robot can't be fixed on location, technicians swap it out immediately so work continues without interruption.
The idea came from real frustration. GMO experienced costly disruptions when damaged robots had to be shipped away for repairs, leaving gaps in their workforce. "Learning from that experience, we came up with the idea of providing replacement humanoids," said Tomohiro Uchida, CEO of GMO Air.
The van looks the part too, complete with ambulance-style markings and purple roof lights. Inside, it's essentially a mobile repair workshop packed with laptops, tools, and enough space to transport full-sized humanoids safely.

Currently, one vehicle operates from GMO's Tokyo headquarters. The company plans to expand if demand grows as more businesses adopt humanoid workers.
The Ripple Effect
This innovation addresses a practical challenge that could accelerate robot adoption across industries. Japan's government aims to deploy 10 million robots by 2040 across 18 sectors, including healthcare, food service, and manufacturing.
The robot repair service could make that ambitious goal more realistic. Businesses hesitate to invest in expensive humanoids if a single malfunction means hours or days of downtime. On-site repairs and instant replacements remove that risk.
McKinsey estimates the general-purpose robotics market could reach $370 billion by 2040. As humanoid robots become more common in everyday settings, maintenance infrastructure matters just as much as the technology itself.
Japan pioneered industrial robotics decades ago but faces stiff competition from China's government-backed humanoid industry and America's AI innovations. This robot ambulance service shows Japan focusing on what makes advanced technology actually work in the real world.
"When humanoids become more popular, this kind of service will be needed," Takizawa said. That future might arrive sooner than expected, and Japan is making sure the infrastructure is ready when it does.
