Japan, Taiwan, US Unite for AI and Chip Tech Summit

When geopolitical tensions threaten global technology supply chains, three democratic nations are choosing cooperation over competition.

The 2026 Japan-Taiwan Innovation Summit will bring together leaders from Japan, Taiwan, and the United States for the first time to explore trilateral technology partnerships. The three-day event runs August 17-19 in Osaka and Tokyo, focusing on semiconductors, AI infrastructure, and building resilient supply chains.

Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike and a US State Department regional technology officer for East Asia will take the stage alongside Taiwan's National Development Council Minister Yeh Chun-hsien. Their message centers on how democratic nations can work together to ensure critical technologies remain accessible and secure.

The summit represents a major shift in how these nations approach innovation. Rather than competing separately, they're building partnerships that benefit startups, investors, and companies across all three countries.

About 40 Taiwanese startups will pitch their innovations in healthtech, AI, smart manufacturing, and semiconductors to Japanese investors and companies. Two companies, Phasetrum and HCmed Innovations, will showcase breakthrough technologies in a special presentation.

The partnership builds on existing success stories like chipmaker TSMC's operations in Kumamoto, Japan. Now the startup ecosystems are following that model, with the Tokyo Metropolitan Government and Startup Island TAIWAN actively linking their innovation networks.

This collaboration reaches far beyond conference halls and pitch sessions. When democracies share technology resources and expertise, they create alternatives to supply chains vulnerable to geopolitical disruption.
