Japan's New Luxury Train Takes Riders to Sacred Mount Kōya

Japan is opening a beautiful new door to one of its most sacred places, making it easier than ever for travelers to experience centuries of spiritual heritage.

Nankai Electric Railway Company launches its luxury tourist train GRAN Tenku on April 24, connecting Osaka's bustling Namba Station to the peaceful mountain sanctuary of Mount Kōya. The 90-minute journey promises panoramic views paired with seasonal breakfast, lunch, or afternoon tea options.

At just €9.30 for a one-way ticket, the experience brings luxury within reach. Two daily round trips will run, departing Namba at 9 am and 12:45 pm, making it easy to plan a day trip or overnight stay.

Mount Kōya isn't just another tourist destination. It's the heart of Shingon Buddhism, established by monk Kobo Daishi in the 9th century and now recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site within the sacred Kii mountain range pilgrimage routes.

After arriving at Gokurakubashi Station, travelers take a cable car up the mountain to discover what awaits. The area houses the head monastery for Shingon Buddhism and Okunoin Temple, where Daishi himself is enshrined.

Okunoin also serves as Japan's largest cemetery, with more than 200,000 graves creating a profound atmosphere of remembrance and peace. Ancient cedar trees tower over moss-covered stones, making it one of the country's most moving spiritual sites.

This new rail connection does more than transport people. It breathes new life into ancient pilgrimage traditions, making spiritual tourism accessible to a generation that values meaningful experiences.

Many temples offer shukubo, traditional temple lodging where visitors sleep on futons and share in the monks' daily rhythms. Guests can try shojin ryori, the vegetarian Buddhist cuisine perfected over centuries, and join morning prayers if they wish.

The Fudozaka Trail, starting right at Gokurakubashi Station, offers hikers a direct path to spiritual discovery. It leads to Fudozaka-guchi Nyonindo temple, where the historic Women Pilgrims Course continues to Okunoin's entrance, following routes once forbidden to women but now open to all.
