Japan's Yutaka Take, 57, Rides Into History With 5,000 Wins

At an age when most athletes have long retired, Yutaka Take is still making history in the saddle.

The 57-year-old Japanese jockey reached his 5,000th career victory on July 12 at Hakodate Racecourse in Hokkaido, riding the favorite Himino Etoile to the finish line. The win caps a remarkable 40-year career that has redefined what's possible in horse racing.

Take's journey began with his first win on March 7, 1987. Since then, he's accumulated 4,669 victories with the Japan Racing Association, 212 regional wins, and 119 international victories across the United States, France, and Australia.

His dominance isn't just about quantity. Take holds the all-time record for prestigious G1 race wins with 86 titles, nearly 2,000 wins ahead of his closest competitor.

What makes Take special isn't brute force but finesse. He rides with a technique that looks almost effortless, using his long limbs like a suspension system to harmonize with horses galloping at 60 kilometers per hour. Instead of simply controlling the horse, he draws out its natural power.

This gentle approach helped him guide Deep Impact to Japan's triple crown in 2005. It calms temperamental horses and unlocks explosive final bursts of speed that have become his signature.

Why This Inspires

Take became a pioneer when Japanese racing wasn't yet respected globally. He ventured overseas with little more than his riding crop and determination, becoming the first Japanese jockey to win an overseas graded stakes race in 1991 and the first to claim an overseas G1 title in 1994.

His willingness to prove himself on foreign tracks opened doors for an entire generation of Japanese riders. He showed that excellence transcends borders and that taking risks can change not just your own life but an entire sport's trajectory.

Even now, Take isn't slowing down. He ranks 11th in wins this year, competing against jockeys decades younger. In June, he became the oldest jockey ever to win a JRA G1 race at 57 years old, then won another G1 title just one week later.

For Take, 5,000 wins is just another number on a journey that's far from over. This August, he'll compete in France's prestigious Prix Jacques le Marois, and in October, he'll chase his long-held dream of winning the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.
