Jess Fox Wins Silver 9 Months After Kidney Surgery

For the first time in her decorated career, three-time Olympic champion Jess Fox says a silver medal feels like winning gold.

The Australian canoe slalom superstar finished just 0.13 seconds behind Slovenia's Eva Alina Hocevar in the women's K1 final at the World Cup in Tacen, Slovenia. But the real victory was simply making it to the starting line.

Nine months ago, Fox underwent surgery to remove a benign tumor from her left kidney. Her return to competition at age 31 marked a comeback that meant more than any of her three Olympic golds or world championship titles.

"Just getting to the start line today was the biggest challenge," Fox said after her podium finish. "It's my first race back and it's just wonderful to be back racing and to start this way."

The Penrith native qualified fourth fastest in the heats with a clean run before posting a time of 81.74 seconds in the final. She lost a little time at a couple of gates but refused to focus on the imperfections.

"They weren't perfect runs, but they were good enough," she said. "To back it up with another good run in the final feels amazing."

Fox, who won double gold in both C1 and K1 events at the 2024 Paris Olympics, showed genuine joy for her competitor. She celebrated Hocevar's fantastic performance and gold medal win with the same enthusiasm she brought to her own comeback.
