Johannesburg Launches First Car-Free Sunday on Main Street

Imagine hearing a city's heartbeat without the roar of engines for the first time.

This Sunday, Main Street in Marshalltown will transform from a business corridor into Johannesburg's living room. For one day, from 10am to 5pm, cars will disappear and people will take over, cycling, skating, and walking freely through the city center.

Main Street Sundays is Jozi's first inner-city car-free experiment, and it's bringing a proven global movement to South Africa's biggest city. From Bogotá to Cape Town, cities have discovered that when streets prioritize people over vehicles, communities come alive.

"Come and enjoy a Sunday where Jozi feels like it belongs to the people," says Mbali Zulu of Jozi My Jozi, one of the organizing groups. The stretch from the magistrates' court to Gandhi Square will become a safe playground for families, divided into zones for art, music, sports, reading, and play.

Kids can enjoy face painting, skateboarding, scooter riding, and collaborative building projects through Play Africa's mobile discovery space. Adults can join walking tours of the Literary District, browse pop-up street libraries, or watch live artists create murals and digital portraits.

This isn't a commercial festival with stages and tickets. It's about slowing down and connecting with neighbors in public space.

Bridge Books will host open-air readings and storytelling sessions, while Urban Sketchers Johannesburg will capture the day's energy on location. Hip-hop artist Osmic Menoe will perform groovy tunes, and the Standard Bank Art Gallery will open its doors for free, showcasing 145 masterpieces from the Johannesburg Art Gallery that just returned from a two-year international tour.

Local restaurants including Sadie's Bistro will welcome hungry visitors, and the Reef Hotel's rooftop bar offers 15th-floor sundowners for those who want to end the day with sky-high views.

The Ripple Effect

Car-free streets might sound simple, but they create something profound. When families can safely walk and play where cars usually dominate, it changes how people see their city and each other.

Cape Town's Bree Street Sundays proved the model works in South Africa, bringing thousands of residents together in spaces they'd never experienced as pedestrians. Now Johannesburg gets to write its own chapter in this movement.
