Johannesburg Taxis Get Safety Overhaul in New Partnership

Every day, millions of people in Johannesburg depend on minibus taxis to get to work, school, and home. Now, a new partnership between taxi industry body Gibela Namela Holdings and urban renewal movement Jozi My Jozi is working to make those journeys safer and more dignified for everyone.

The groups signed their agreement on August 6 at Constitution Hill, marking a turning point for a transport system that moves more people than any other in the city. "If we fix taxis, we positively shift the trajectory of the whole city," said Jozi My Jozi CEO Innocent Mabusela.

The timing matters. Recent reports highlighted dangerous conditions at taxi ranks and too many road accidents involving minibus taxis. Instead of waiting for government intervention, industry leaders spent months developing solutions with the people who run the system every day.

The partnership focuses on four main areas working together. First, taxi ranks will get infrastructure upgrades and consistent cleaning to create more dignified public spaces. Second, high-traffic zones will receive better security, including solar lights and smart safety cameras coordinated with queue marshals.

Third, drivers themselves will get health support. Last year, mobile screening centers at major taxi ranks assessed drivers' heart health and offered medical care. That program continues under this new agreement, addressing both physical and mental wellbeing.

Fourth, professional training programs will help drivers improve road safety skills. The partnership also plans to introduce technology for digital record-keeping and modern electronic ticketing, laying groundwork for future government subsidies and public transport integration.

The Ripple Effect: This partnership does more than improve taxi rides. When the transport system that carries millions of people daily becomes safer and more reliable, entire communities benefit. The City of Johannesburg Transport department attended the signing and supports the initiative. For an industry often criticized, this collaboration shows what happens when operators, communities, and renewal movements work together instead of pointing fingers.

The changes will touch everyone from association leaders to individual drivers to the commuters who trust this system with their lives every single day.
