John Deere's Free AI Tool Helps Farmers Boost Profits

For generations, farmers have been drowning in their own success stories, buried under mountains of field data they rarely had time to analyze properly.

John Deere just changed that with JD, a conversational AI tool that lets farmers ask simple questions and get profit-boosting answers from years of their own farm records. Instead of hunting through spreadsheets and dashboards, a farmer can now ask "How did my fuel use during tillage compare to last year?" and get an instant answer that could save thousands of dollars.

The tool lives inside Operations Center, John Deere's free mobile platform that already helps farmers track their equipment and field performance. What makes JD special is that it only uses each farm's private data, so farmers get personalized insights based on their own history, not generic advice.

"We want to put a punctuation mark on a five-letter word: TRUST," said Jahmy Hindman, John Deere's chief technology officer. The company partnered with Iowa State University to test the technology on real farms with real farmers before rolling it out.

The AI can answer questions that used to take hours to figure out manually. Which field settings gave the best yield? Which equipment operator covers the most acres per hour? When's the optimal harvest time based on past years? These insights help farmers work smarter, save fuel, optimize labor, and ultimately grow more profitable crops.

John Deere's AI team spent three years tracking the evolution of generative AI to build something farmers would actually use. "Most customers don't even know what an LLM is, nor do they care," explained Melissa Neuendorf, principal product manager for the project. "Our job is to hide that complexity from them."

By making sophisticated AI accessible to every farmer regardless of their equipment brand or budget, John Deere is helping level the playing field in American agriculture.

The company plans to open early access to JD this fall and expand availability over the next year. All farm data stays secure in the cloud, and John Deere emphasizes that the data belongs to the farmers, not the company.
