John Tesh Thrives 10 Years Past 18-Month Cancer Prognosis

John Tesh is rewriting his own story, celebrating over a decade of life after doctors told him he had just 18 months.

The former "Entertainment Tonight" host and musician was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer in 2015. Doctors said the cancer was inoperable and told him to get his affairs in order.

"It's like getting a brick in the face," Tesh recalled. He admitted the diagnosis sent him into a dark spiral of alcohol and what his wife called a "pity party."

But his wife, actress Connie Sellecca, refused to accept defeat. The "faith-filled Italian girl from the Bronx" told her husband, "This is not us," and demanded he snap out of it.

Her intervention saved more than his life. It saved their marriage. "It breaks couples apart, prostate cancer, and it almost did us," Tesh admitted.

Today, Tesh manages his metastatic cancer through a treatment called "pulsing." Doctors let the cancer grow slightly, then treat it aggressively, cycling back and forth to keep it stable without constant intervention.

"It's scary until you get used to it because it's like, 'Why am I living with cancer?'" he explained. But living with it beats the alternative he was once facing.

Tesh's journey shows that terminal diagnoses aren't always final sentences. Medical advances in cancer treatment, particularly for prostate cancer, are giving patients years they were told they'd never see.

His honesty about the darkness matters too. He didn't pretend to be brave every moment. He struggled, made mistakes, and nearly lost what mattered most before finding his way back.

The power of having someone believe in you when you've stopped believing in yourself can literally be lifesaving. Sellecca's refusal to let her husband give up gave him permission to keep fighting.
