Johnstown's Week-Long Juneteenth Fest Brings Community Together

For one special week each June, downtown Johnstown transforms into a celebration of freedom, community, and hope.

The city's 20th annual Juneteenth celebration stretched across seven days this year, featuring dance performances, live music, and activities designed to bring the whole community together. At Peoples Natural Gas Park, 14-year-old Myhkasia Lucas and the Flood City Youth Fitness Academy "Dazzlin Divas" took the stage, their energy lighting up the crowd on opening night.

Youth Day drew families from across the region, with local balloon artist Mary Ann Ross creating colorful creations for children lined up at her booth. The festivities also included a moving tribute to local Black veterans, their photographs displayed proudly throughout the park.

Emcee Deacon Jeffrey Wilson returned to lead the traditional parade down Main Street, a procession that's become a cherished annual tradition for Johnstown residents. The week blended gospel music, jazz performances, and contemporary acts, offering something for every generation.

This isn't just a festival. It's proof that small cities can lead the way in building bridges.

For two decades, Johnstown has used Juneteenth as more than a commemoration of the end of slavery in 1865. The week has become a platform for unity, bringing together people of all backgrounds to celebrate progress while acknowledging the work still ahead.
