J.T. Poston Wins Memorial After 33 Holes in One Day

J.T. Poston walked off the 18th green Sunday evening with more than just a trophy. He'd earned a shot at his first major championship and avoided what would have been an absolutely brutal Monday.

The golfer beat Ryan Gerard in a two-hole playoff at the Memorial Tournament after weather delays forced both players to complete 33 holes in a single day. Saturday's storms had wiped out all but five holes, creating a Sunday schedule that would test anyone's endurance.

When they finally finished their fourth round Sunday afternoon, Poston and Gerard were tied at 12-under par. Back to the 18th tee they went for the first playoff hole, both making par to stay even.

On their second trip down 18, Gerard bogeyed while Poston sank his par putt to claim the win. The $4 million prize was nice, but the real reward was avoiding Monday's qualifier.

If Poston hadn't won, he would have played those 33 holes Sunday and then faced 36 more on Monday just to try earning a U.S. Open spot. That's 69 holes in two days for a golfer still chasing his first major title.

Why This Inspires

Poston's victory shows what happens when you push through exhaustion for something that matters. He could have let the marathon day wear him down or felt defeated heading into a playoff after that much golf.

Instead, he stayed focused through hole after hole, maintaining the mental strength needed to sink that final putt. His best major finish so far is fifth at last year's PGA Championship, and now he's got fresh chances at both the U.S. Open in June and the Open Championship in July.

This marks Poston's fourth PGA Tour win, each one building toward that major championship he's been working toward. Now he can prepare properly instead of grinding through another qualifier on tired legs.
