K-Pop Star Repays $71 Kindness with Armfuls of Gratitude

A supermarket owner's $71 gift to a desperate teenager came back to him years later in the form of gratitude, red ginseng, and a heartwarming reminder that kindness never goes unnoticed.

Kim Jaejoong, now a successful 40-year-old singer and former member of K-pop group Dong Bang Shin Ki, recently shared the story on comedian Kim Daehee's YouTube channel. At 16, Kim moved to Seoul alone after passing an audition for SM Entertainment with no financial support from family.

Training while supporting himself left Kim broke and desperate. He walked for hours between neighborhoods because he couldn't afford subway fare. He worked construction, delivered newspapers, and waited tables just to survive.

One evening, facing an unpaid rent deadline, Kim tried selling small items he'd bought wholesale. In a moment of desperation, he walked into a supermarket and tried to sell them items they already stocked on their own shelves.

The owner looked at the young boy and saw something familiar. "You look about the same age as my son. Why are you out doing this?" he asked. When Kim said he needed 100,000 won (about $71), the owner handed him the money and bought his goods without hesitation.

Kim never forgot. After his debut and success, he returned to the neighborhood with a bundle of cash, determined to repay the kindness tenfold.

The supermarket owner turned out to also be a pastor at a church in the same building. When Kim found him and tried to return the money, the pastor didn't clearly remember the struggling teenager from years ago. The pastor declined the cash.

So Kim bought armfuls of red ginseng products and gift sets from the same supermarket and presented them along with his thanks. "I felt so good that day," Kim recalled with a smile, adding that there were several people like that in the neighborhood, and he went looking for each one.

Kim's story reminds us that acts of kindness create ripples that last for years. The supermarket owner saw a boy the same age as his son and responded with compassion, not judgment. He didn't lecture or question. He just helped.
