K9 Maisy Saves Ecosystem From 99 Pounds of Illegal Goods

Customs and Border Protection K9 Maisy recently alerted officers to a suspicious suitcase arriving from Thailand. Inside, agents discovered a stunning 99 pounds of prohibited items: 50 pounds of raw meat, 33 pounds of mangoes, garlic, bamboo, banana plants, and a 16-pound Bengal monitor lizard.

The discovery might sound quirky, but it represents a serious win for environmental protection. These prohibited items can introduce foreign pests, animal diseases, and invasive species that could devastate American agriculture and ecosystems.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service took custody of the monitor lizard, while the other items were properly disposed of. CBP posted a photo of proud Maisy sitting behind her unusual haul, asking "If you discovered all this in a suitcase, wouldn't you be this happy?"

Maisy is part of a dedicated team of agriculture detector dogs who inspect international luggage daily. These specially trained canines can detect scents humans miss, creating an invisible shield protecting American farms, gardens, and wild spaces from foreign threats.
