Kaduna Upgrades 255 Health Centers to 24-Hour Care

✨ Faith Restored

Kaduna State has become Nigeria's first region to upgrade all 255 primary healthcare centers to operate around the clock with full emergency and maternity services. The transformation means every woman in the state can now access prenatal care, delivery services, and baby immunizations at her local clinic, day or night.

Kaduna State is rewriting what's possible in Nigerian healthcare, one clinic at a time.

The state has achieved something no other region in Nigeria has managed: upgrading all 255 primary health centers to Level 2 facilities that run 24 hours a day. These aren't just clinics with extended hours. Each center now provides complete emergency care, obstetrics, neonatal services, and maintains full stocks of medical supplies.

"A woman can walk into this facility, do her antenatal clinic, deliver in this facility and then her baby will do immunization and other basic care," explained Health Commissioner Umma K Ahmad during a recent media tour. If complications arise, ambulances stand ready to transfer patients to general hospitals through an established referral system.

The healthcare push is part of broader infrastructure investments across the state. Governor Uba Sani's administration has also approved competitive salary scales and increased hazard allowances for health workers, addressing the staffing challenges that plague many Nigerian states.

Beyond healthcare, the state opened the Institute of Vocational Training and Skills Development with three campuses serving different regions. The institute teaches 14 trades and offers internationally recognized certifications through its National Skills Qualification program. Currently, 497 students are enrolled at the Rigachukun campus alone, learning everything from solar installation to fashion design.

A 35-kilometer road now connects 76 farming communities across three local governments, including a 130-meter bridge over the Kaduna River. It's the longest single road construction project in the state in 20 years.

The Ripple Effect

When primary health centers operate 24 hours, maternal and infant mortality rates drop dramatically. Women no longer face impossible choices between traveling dangerous distances at night or delivering without medical support. The vocational training institutes create pathways out of poverty, while improved roads mean farmers can get produce to markets before it spoils.

These aren't isolated projects but pieces of a coordinated development strategy. The Nigerian Institute of Public Relations took notice, selecting Kaduna to host its 2026 National Public Relations Week despite initial concerns about security in the region.

One upgrade at a time, Kaduna is showing other Nigerian states what's possible when government prioritizes infrastructure that touches everyday lives.
