Kansas Baseball Wins Big 12 Title After 20 Years

After 20 years of waiting, the Kansas Jayhawks baseball team finally brought home the Big 12 tournament championship trophy with a dominant 9-0 win over West Virginia in Surprise, Arizona.

The victory marked a stunning achievement for the program. Kansas became the first team since 2021 to win both the conference regular season title and the tournament championship in the same year.

The game stayed tense through six innings as Kansas repeatedly escaped trouble with stellar defensive plays. The offense finally broke through in the seventh inning with an explosive display of power hitting that sealed West Virginia's fate.

First baseman Josh Dykhoff delivered the knockout blow with a towering 458-foot, three-run home run that doubled Kansas's lead to 6-0. Jordan Bach and Augusto Mungarrieta followed immediately with back-to-back home runs to put the game out of reach.

The defensive heroics kept Kansas alive during those anxious early innings. Bach made a crucial throw in the fifth inning that allowed Mungarrieta to tag out a runner at home plate. An inning later, Dykhoff made an impressive over-the-shoulder catch in shallow right field.

The championship means Kansas will host an NCAA tournament regional for the first time in years. Thousands of Lawrence fans will now get to watch postseason baseball at home instead of traveling to see their team compete.

The victory also validates years of rebuilding for a program that hadn't won a regular season conference title in 77 years. Kansas proved it belongs among college baseball's elite programs.
