Kansas City High School Soars from 67% to 81% Graduation

A Kansas City high school once struggling with low graduation rates just proved that the right program can turn everything around.

Northeast High School has increased its graduation rate from 67% to 81% in recent years while boosting average ACT scores by two full points. The turnaround was significant enough that the state removed the school from its list of comprehensive support schools, a designation reserved for institutions needing intensive improvement.

The secret weapon? A program called 3DE that connects classroom learning to real-world business challenges.

Since launching in August 2022, the Junior Achievement curriculum has grown from ninth grade to all four high school years. This year, the first cohort of students who started as freshmen will graduate with skills most college students don't acquire until internships.

Senior Mohammed Khader told the school board that 3DE "opened my mind to possibilities." Other students reported gaining confidence, sharper focus, and better time management skills that transformed how they approach learning.

The numbers back up their stories. English language arts proficiency jumped 15.5% on end-of-course assessments after 3DE implementation.

Students have tackled 42 real-world case challenges connecting academic concepts to actual industry problems. They've pitched 29 prototypes and business models to community stakeholders, receiving over 1,000 hours of mentoring and coaching from professionals.

The Ripple Effect

The impact extends beyond Northeast's walls. Thirty seniors recently developed consulting plans for three local businesses including Mark One Electric, Sporting KC, and Accenture. These aren't classroom simulations but genuine strategic recommendations that real companies requested.

Principal Alisha Glover shared the results at a Kansas City Public Schools board meeting in March 2026, where student performances and recognition ceremonies celebrated the culture shift happening at Northeast. The school district itself is making progress, currently fully accredited and on track to maintain that status.

Northeast remains Missouri's only comprehensive 3DE school serving grades nine through 12. Parent testimonials at the board meeting emphasized how the program changed not just grades but attitudes, with students coming home excited to talk about their projects and future careers.

The transformation shows what happens when schools give students meaningful work that matters beyond test scores.
