Kansas City Volunteers Make Real Impact at These 5 Groups

At Wayside Waifs in south Kansas City, volunteers socialize dogs and cats waiting for their forever homes. The shelter accepts helpers as young as 13 when accompanied by a parent. Positions include dog walkers, cat socializers, and meet-and-greet specialists who help match pets with potential adopters.

Great Plains SPCA in Merriam offers similar opportunities. "People love volunteering here because opportunities like walking dogs, socializing cats, and fostering pets allow them to directly support the shelter's lifesaving mission," said Hathaway Maranda, the organization's vice president of philanthropy and engagement. Both shelters are no-kill facilities that don't euthanize animals for space.

Prefer working with people? Lead to Read KC pairs volunteers with elementary students for 30-minute reading sessions during lunch hours. The impact is measurable: kids improve their reading skills, confidence, and enjoyment of books.

Partners include schools across Kansas City Public Schools, Kansas City Kansas Public Schools, and several other districts. "Literacy is a community issue, and Lead to Read KC believes community is also the answer," said executive director Rhea LeGrande. Volunteers can commit weekly or serve as fill-ins when regular readers are absent.

Literacy KC focuses on adult learners instead, offering English language classes, high school equivalency prep, and digital literacy programs. Tutors work directly with adults building essential skills for work and daily life.
