Kansas School Opens $52M Campus Teaching Real Job Skills

A former call center in Olathe, Kansas just became something far more exciting: a massive campus where high school students learn job skills that companies actually need.

Olathe Public Schools celebrated the opening of its Innovation Campus on Thursday, the final piece of a 2022 bond measure that transformed 260,000 square feet into a career-ready learning hub. The $52 million facility now houses six academies covering culinary arts, healthcare, animal sciences, construction, emergency medical services, and electronics and avionics.

Senior Lamia Mohammed Seghir, who studies electronics and avionics, said the program changed how students see themselves. Before joining, many walked into school feeling unsure and hesitant about their futures. Now they have real skills and concrete plans for life after graduation.

The building features flexible open spaces instead of rigid cinder block walls, which Superintendent Brent Yeager said will help it adapt for decades to come. That flexibility is already proving useful since 50,000 square feet remain available for new programs based on community needs.

The district is in early talks to create an aviation program and has already started conversations with Panasonic about advanced manufacturing training that could lead directly to jobs. Yeager said the approach is simple: if businesses identify a need, the school wants to help fill it.

Beyond the academies, the campus includes a state-of-the-art esports arena that recently hosted the Kansas high school state tournament. It also features a mental health suite and special education programs for students ages 18 to 21.
