Kansas Volunteers Help 281 Seniors File Free Tax Returns
Eight volunteers in Great Bend, Kansas just helped 281 older adults navigate tax season for free, securing vital refunds and building financial security. The AARP Foundation Tax-Aide program has been delivering this lifeline to communities nationwide since 1968.
For 281 seniors in Great Bend, Kansas, tax season just got a whole lot easier thanks to eight dedicated volunteers who gave their time to help neighbors keep more money in their pockets.
The AARP Foundation Tax-Aide program wrapped up another successful season, with local volunteers providing free tax preparation and filing services to taxpayers aged 50 and older with low to moderate incomes. That's 13 more people helped compared to last year, and every single return means critical refunds going to those who need them most.
"Because every dollar counts for those on low incomes, our team works to ensure no senior misses out on the essential tax credits and deductions they are owed," said Linn Hogg, director of Volunteers in Action of Central Kansas and local program coordinator. The program served 12,197 taxpayers across Kansas and more than 1.2 million nationwide.
The work goes far beyond crunching numbers. Volunteers witness the moment when anxiety transforms into relief on their clients' faces, a reminder that financial help carries emotional weight too.

The Ripple Effect
This program creates waves of positive change that extend well beyond individual tax returns. When seniors secure the refunds and credits they've earned, they gain breathing room in tight budgets for groceries, medications, and utilities.
The volunteer model itself strengthens communities by connecting neighbors who want to help with those who need support. From college students to retirees, people from all backgrounds donate their time, bringing diverse skills to serve a common good.
With training available in December and January, the program welcomes anyone ready to make a difference. Volunteers can contribute anywhere from a few hours to 40 hours weekly during the February through April filing season, and no AARP membership is required.
The need remains strong, and the Great Bend site could serve even more seniors with additional volunteer support. Those interested can reach Hogg at 620-792-1614 or linnhogg59@gmail.com to learn about opportunities in tax preparation, technical support, organization, recruitment, and translation services.
Since launching in 1968, Tax-Aide has grown into the nation's largest free, volunteer-based tax assistance program, proving that neighbors helping neighbors never goes out of style.
